This year we decided to spend Golden Week outside of Japan, in order to get away from the crowds. We went to Penang, in Malaysia, and we stayed at a nice beach resort in the Batu Ferringhi area of Penang island. It was also nice not having to worry about earthquakes or radiation for a week. But as the crow flies, it wasn't too far from Banda Aceh, so we were sure to check we hadn't been given a ground-floor bedroom in our hotel, in case of another tsunami !
Cette annee, nous avons decide de passer la "Golden Week" en dehors du Japon, pour eviter les enormes foules que nous avions rencontrees l'annee derniere. Nous sommes alles a Penang, en Malaisie, et nous sommes restes au bord de la mer a Batu Ferringhi, sur l'ile de Penang. Cela faisait plaisir de ne pas avoir a nous soucier de tremblements de terre ni de radioactivite pendant une semaine. Mais a vol d'oiseau, nous n'etions pas tres loin de Banda Aceh, alors nous avons bien-sur verifie qu'on ne nous aie pas attribue une chambre au rez de chaussee, en cas d'un nouveau tsunami !
On our first full day in Penang, we went to do some sight-seeing. We started off with a nice journey on a funicular train to go up Penang Hill. During the colonial era, this is where all the rich people had their week-end houses.
Notre premier jour a Penang, nous sommes alles visiter un peu l'ile. Nous avons commence avec une promenade en funiculaire pour monter "Penang Hill". Pendant l'epoque coloniale, c'est ici que les riches avaient leurs residences secondaires.
We were very fortunate to have a personal tour guide for the day. Daddy's colleague, who is called Poh An (or P.A., for short) was very kind to spend the day with us, showing us around the sights of Penang. Oscar got on very well with him !
Nous avons eu un guide personnel pour la journee. Un de mes collegues, qui s'appelle Poh An (ou P.A.) a ete assez gentil pour passer la journee avec nous, en nous montrant les points d'interet de Penang. Oscar s'est beaucoup amuse avec PA !
We had a nice view from the top of Penang Hill over Georgetown, and some of the tropical forests.
On avait une belle vue depuis le sommet de Penang Hill, sur Georgetown et sur la foret tropicale.
We saw a huge snake, but decided not to take up the option of having our photo taken with it !
Nous avons vu un enorme serpent avec lequel on pouvait se faire prendre en photo... ce que nous n'avons pas voulu faire!
This was one of the original carriages of the funicular train, from the Colonial era. The train has been upgraded at least a couple of times since then, and in fact, it had only just re-opened one week earlier with a brand new train !
Nous avons vu un des wagons d'origine du funiculaire. Le train a ete remplace au moins deux fois depuis, et en fait, il venait tout juste de rouvrir avec un train flambant neuf, une semaine avant notre arrivee !
There was a very colourful Indian temple at the top of the hill. But Oscar was more interested in the very colourful children's playground just next door !
Il y avait un temple indien tres colore en haut de la colline. Mais Oscar s'interessait plus au parc et aux jeux pour enfants, qui etaient juste a cote !
In fact, there were temples all over the place. Indian temples, buddhist temples, Chinese temples, and lots more ! Of course, as you all know, Oscar loves Big Buddhas !
En fait, il y avait des temples partout. Des temples indiens, des temples bouddhistes, des temples chinois, et bien d'autres ! Comme vous le savez peut-etre, Oscar adore les Grands Bouddhas !
We went for lunch with PA in a nice restaurant in Georgetown. The speciality was a cuisine known as "nyonya baba", which is the cuisine of Chinese immigrants who arrived in Malaysia many, many generations ago. It was really delicious ! Malaysia is a real melting pot of different cultures, due to its history - Chinese, Indian, British, Dutch, Portugese, Malay and more !
Pour le dejeuner, nous sommes alles manger dans un restaurant avec PA dans Georgetown. La specialite etait un type de cuisine qui s'appelle "nyonya baba", la cuisine d'immigres chinois qui sont arrives en Malaisie il y a de nombreuses generations. C'etait delicieux ! La Malaisie est un vrai melange de cultures, a cause de son histoire - Chinois, Indiens, Britanniques, Hollandais, Portugais, Malay et d'autres encore !
After lunch, we went for a bit of a tour in Georgetown, where we saw some of the old colonial buildings.....
Apres le dejeuner, nous avons fait un tour dans Georgetown, ou nous avons vu quelques batiments de l'epoque coloniale...

There are many chinese "Clans", or dynasties, with a deep heritage in Malaysia, each with their own temple for large family gatherings and events. This was the temple of the "Choo" clan.
Il y a beaucoup de "Clans", ou dynasties, avec une tres longue histoire en Malaisie, chacun avec leur propre temple pour de grands evenements familiaux ou occasions particulieres. Ceci est le temple du clan "Choo" (le plus remarquable).
After our day of sightseeing, we went back to the hotel. Oscar had a quick dip in the pool, then played on the beach for a while, watching a game of beach volleyball.
Apres notre journee de tourisme, nous sommes rentres a l'hotel. Oscar s'est baigne un peu dans la piscine, et ensuite il a joue un moment sur la plage, en regardant un match de volleyball.
We had our dinner in the hotel, just next to the beach, and Oscar was quite happy playing in the sandpit.
Nous avons dine ce soir-la dans le restaurant de notre hotel, au bord de la plage, et Oscar etait tres content de pouvoir continuer a jouer dans un bac a sable.
When the band appeared, Oscar was happy to join in with his invisible microphone !

The next day, we had a nice restful day at the hotel. There were several different outdoor swimming pools, including this one which was perfect for small kids, with a very gradual slope, and a huge canopy to protect us from the sun.
Le lendemain, nous avons passe la journee a l'hotel. Il y avait plusieurs piscines, y compris celle-ci qui demarre tout en douceur et avec une grande bache pour proteger contre le soleil.
Oscar had good fun with this huge water pistol, until it broke after just a few hours ! Probably not a bad thing, as it had the potential to upset lots of people !
Oscar s'est bien amuse avec cet enorme pistolet a eau, du moins jusqu'a ce qu'il soit casse apres quelques heures seulement ! C'etait peut-etre pour le mieux, car ce pistolet aurait pu nous creer beaucoup de problemes !
Oscar played for a while on the beach, supposedly one of the finest beaches in Malaysia. But unfortunately the sea there is apparently not too clean and full of jellyfishes, so not recommended for bathing! Anyway, Oscar was quite happy with the swimming pools.
Oscar a joue un peu sur la plage, qui etait apparemment une des meilleures plages de Malaisie. Malheureusement, la mer n'etait pas tres propre et pleine de meduses, donc pas ideale pour des baignades! Mais Oscar etait tres content dans les piscines de l'hotel.
For our pre-dinner aperitif, we ended the day with a round of Pina Coladas.

We went out one day to visit one of the local shopping centres. We didn't really buy much, but Oscar got his first driving experience !
Un jour nous sommes alles visiter un des centres commerciaux dans Georgetown. On n'a pas achete grand chose, mais Oscar a eu sa premiere experience au volant !
Back at the hotel, Oscar continued to enjoy himself at the swimming pool. He found some new uses for his Crocs !
De retour a l'hotel, Oscar a continue de s'amuser dans la piscine. Il a trouve de nouvelles applications pour ses Crocs !

Up until now, Oscar has always been a bit frightened in swimming baths. But after a few days in Malaysia, he realized how much fun it was to jump into the water !
Jusque la, Oscar a toujours eu un peu peur dans l'eau. Mais apres quelques jours, il a compris comme c'etait bien de sauter dans l'eau !
And once he started, there was no stopping him !

We went out to eat at restaurants outside the hotel on a few evenings. One of the specialities was freshly squeezed apple juice, which Oscar quite liked.
Nous sommes alles diner en dehors de l'hotel plusieurs soirs. Une des specialites etait un jus de pomme pressee, qu'Oscar aimait bien.
We caught a lift back to the hotel on a kind of rickshaw bike.
Nous sommes rentres a l'hotel sur un pousse-pousse!
One of the famous landmarks in Penang are the "Jetties". They project out from the main island, and have houses built on stilts running alongside. Each jetty is named after a famous family. To be honest, it was interesting to see, but we wouldn't fancy living there!
On nous a conseille de visiter les "Jetties", ou jetees. Il y a des maisons sur pilotis qui sont construites le long de ces "jetties". Chaque "jetty" est nommee apres une certaine famille. Pour etre honnete, c'etait interessant a voir, mais nous n'etions pas tentes d'y habiter !
We spent a few hours with a local tour guide one day, and we had the whole mini-bus to ourselves ! We started off by visiting a "Batik" factory. This is a traditional method for printing on materials, using wax to create the templates.
Nous avons passe quelques heures avec un guide local un jour, et nous avions le mini-bus complet rien que pour nous ! Nous avons commence notre journee avec une visite d'un atelier de "Batik", une facon traditionnelle d'imprimer des motifs sur differents types de tissu, en utilisant de la cire.
Our guide showed us how to get rubber from rubber trees. This was one of the main activities during the colonial era.
Notre guide nous a montre comment obtenir du plastique a partir d'un arbre a caoutchouc. Ceci etait une des activites principales pendant l'epoque coloniale.
Oscar was very happy to see some "cheeky monkies" !
Oscar etait tres content de voir des singes, en semi-liberte. Beaucoup vivent a l'etat sauvage dans les forets ici!.

Back at the swimming pool, it was fairly quiet during the week, and Oscar had one of the pools all to himself for a while !
De retour a la piscine de l'hotel, c'etait assez calme en semaine, et Oscar avait une des piscines pour lui tout seul pendant un moment !

Oscar made some friends while we were there. Ethan and Holly were from Australia.
Oscar s'est fait des amis pendant nos vacances. Ethan et Holly venaient d'Australie (comme sa maitresse a l'ecole!).

On Friday Daddy went to the office to see PA. So Mummy took Oscar to the "Adventure Zone" children's play area, which was just next to the hotel.
Vendredi je suis alle au bureau pour voir PA. Veronique a donc emmene Oscar au parc pour enfants, qui etait juste a cote de notre hotel.
Oscar had a great time !
