Sankei-en Garden - Jardin Sankei-en

Dimanche 18 avril, nous sommes alles visiter le jardin Sankei-en, qui se trouve pas loin de chez nous. C'etait vraiment magnifique. Il faisait assez beau, pour une fois! Oscar s'est bien promene, et il a vu des poissons (enormes!), des tortues, des femmes habillees en kimono traditionnel. C'etait tres verdoyant et tres paisible (sauf tout le bruit que faisait d'Oscar!). Ce jardin traditionnel japonais a ouvert au public en 1906 et a ete cree par un riche marchand de soie. Il a fait venir les batiments que vous voyez de Kyoto et d'autres villes du Japon, batiments datant du 17eme siecle! Beaucoup d'entre eux sont classes au patrimoine japonais. On Sunday 18th April we went to visit the Sankei-en Garden, which is not far from where we live. It was really beautiful. For once, the weather was quite nice! Oscar enjoyed walking around, and he saw lots of fish (massive ones!), turtles, and women dressed in traditional Japanese kimono's. Compared to a lot of other places we have visited, it was very green, and very peaceful (apart from all the noise made by Oscar!). This traditional japanese garden was opened to the public in 1906 and was created by a rich silk trader. He bought and had the buildings transported all the way from Kyoto and other cities, these buildings having been constructed in the 17th century! Yokohama Marine Tower - Tour marine de Yokohama

Samedi 17 avril nous avons visite la Marine Tower, un ancien phare dans la Baie de Yokohama (voir http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/tour-marine-de-yokohama pour quelques details). Nous sommes montes avec Oscar en fin d'apres-midi, et l'ascenseur lui a bien plu! Notre appartement se trouve dans l'immeuble brun au centre de la premiere photo, a gauche du petit parc (l'America Yama Park). Sur la derniere photo, on apercoit le pont de la baie de Yokohama.

On Saturday 17th April we went to visit the Marine Tower, a former lighthouse, in Yokohama Bay (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/yokohama_marine_tower for more details). We went up to the top in the late afternoon, and Oscar really liked the lift journey. Our apartment is in the brown building in the middle of the first photo, just to the left of the small park (America Yama Park). On the last picture, you can see the Yokohama Bay bridge.

Les parcs et les chiens! Parks and dogs!

Oscar aime bien aller au parc. Il y a deux semaines nous sommes alles au Yamashita Parc comme d'habitude, mais il y avait un concours de composition florale ce jour-la.

Oscar really likes going to the park. When we went to Yamashita Park a couple of weeks ago, we found that a flower exhibition had been set up.








En general lorsque nous allons au parc, Oscar reussit toujours a faire amis-amis avec quelqu'un ou quelque chose. Il aime bien les chiens. Au Japon, les petits chiens sont tres apprecies, et leurs proprietaires les traitent avec enormement d'affection. La plupart des chiens ont une veste et d'autres habits ; on voit souvent des poussettes speciales pour chiens, avec un ou plusieurs petits chiens dedans ; la plupart des grands magasins ont un tres grand rayon dedie aux articles pour chiens ; et il y a beaucoup de magasin dedies entierement aux chiens (habits, articles de toilette, paniers, jouets, etc.). Une des choses les plus amusantes, c'est que beaucoup de supermarches ont des caddies speciaux pour les chiens, avec un film plastique bleu au fond du caddy pour les differencier d'un caddy normal. Vous pouvez imaginer les regards que Maman a recus lorsqu'elle est partie faire ses courses avec un "caddie pour chien" et qu'elle a commence a mettre ses courses dedans! Nous allons essayer de prendre d'autres photos amusantes, mais voici un avant-gout de ce a quoi vous pouvez vous attendre !

Usually when we go to the park, Oscar manages to befriend somebody or something. He seems to quite like dogs. In Japan, small dogs are very popular, and their owners treat them very lovingly, to put it extremely mildly! Most dogs have a jacket and other items of apparel ; it is very common to see an owner pushing a special kind of "dog push chair", with one or more dogs in it ; most department stores have a whole section dedicated to dog things, and there are many shops which are completely dedicated to dog things (clothes, baskets, toys etc.). One of the most funny things is that a lot of supermarkets have special trollies which owners can put their dogs in, with a blue plastic sheet in the bottom of the trolley to differentiate them from the normal ones. Imagine the look of horror on the face of a supermarket worker when Mummy, completely unbeknown to her, set off round the supermarket with a "dog trolley"and started putting her shopping in it! We will try to take some more amusing photos later, but here's just an appetizer !

Oscar fait rigoler tout le monde. Plusieurs fois en se promenant, des gens (souvent des mamies) se sont arretees pour parler avec lui, et finissent par lui donner un biscuit ou un gateau. En voici un exemple...

Oscar seems to make everybody laugh. Often when we are out walking, people (particularly old ladies) stop to talk to him, and they often end up giving him a biscuit or a cake. Here's a typical example...

Paques ! Easter !

Paques n'est pas fete au Japon, et il n'y a pas de jour ferie. On ne trouve pas non plus les montagnes de chocolat que l'on trouve en Europe autour de Paques. Mais nous avons quand-meme achete 3 mini cocottes en chocolat dans la boutique Godiva pres de chez nous, et Oscar avait l'air de les apprecier !

Easter isn't really celebrated in Japan. There is no day off work for either Easter Friday or Easter Monday. And there certainly aren't the mountains of chocolate Easter eggs for sale in the shops. But we did buy some mini chocolate hens for Oscar from the very nice Godiva chocolate shop near our apartment, and Oscar seemed to enjoy them!

Sakura !

Au mois d'avril nous avons pu enfin voir les fameux "Sakura", ou cerisiers en fleur. L'apres-midi du 3 avril, nous sommes alles au Parc de Negishi, ou beaucoup de gens etaient en train de celebrer la traditionnelle "Hanami", ou fete des cerisiers.

In April, we at last saw the long-awaited "Sakura", or cherry blossom. On 3rd April we spent the late afternoon at Negishi Park, where lots of people were enjoying themselves celebrating with the traditional "Hanami"cherry blossom party.

Oscar s'est bien amuse a decouvrir ce nouveau parc, dans des conditions climatiques plus favorables que lors de la derniere visite!

Oscar had fun discovering this new park, with much better weather conditions than his last visit there!

Il a trouve un velo qui ressemblait beaucoup au sien. Heureusement, cela ne semblait pas trop deranger la vraie proprietaire!

He found a tricycle which looked very much like his own. Fortunately, the real owner didn't seem to be too bothered by his attempts to steal it!

La plupart des gens avait emmene leur propre pique-nique, ainsi qu'une sacree quantite de cannettes de biere et autres boissons !

Most people had brought their picnics with them, together with lots of cans of beer and other drinks!

Heureusement, les Japonais sont tres disciplines pour le tri de leurs dechets, et presque tout le monde partait avec des sacs plastiques pre-tries pour cannettes, bouteilles en plastiques, cartons, et autres dechets.

Fortunately, the Japanese are very disciplined with the sorting of their rubbish, and everybody left with a collection of pre-sorted rubbish, with separate bags for cans, plastic bottles, cardboard, and other rubbish.

Je suppose qu'on finit par s'habituer aux regles de tri et de recyclage des dechets. Ces regles sont incroyablement compliquees! Apparemment, chaque ville a ses propres regles, et la ville de Yokohama est bien connue pour ses regles plutot compliquees. Il faut pratiquement un Bac +4 de Gestion des Dechets pour ne pas se tromper! Si vous ne nous croyez pas, ouvrez en grand l'image ci-dessous! Tous les dechets doivent etre tries correctement, et places dans des sacs plastiques suffisamment transparents pour que les eboueurs puissent verifier. ll y a des jours bien specifiques pour l'enlevement de chaque type de dechet, et il ne faut pas se tromper! Si on laisse un sac de dechets plastiques dehors alors que c'est le jour pour l'enlevement de carton et papier, on a droit a un gentil mot de rappel dans la boite aux lettres, ecrit par le gardien de l'immeuble. Cela ne nous est pas encore arrive, mais c'est bel et bien arrive a nos amis voisins, qui n'ont pas non plus, comme nous, leur Bac +4 de Gestion des Dechets!

I suppose you eventually get used to the unbelievably complicated rubbish collection and recycling rules. Apparently, each town has its own rules for rubbish collection and recycling, and Yokohama is supposedly one of the most complicated. Well, it certainly seems complicated enough to us. You almost need a degree in Waste Management in order to master these rules! If you open up the following photo, you can see what we have to contend with every day! All the different types of rubbish have to be correctly sorted, and put in rubbish bags which are sufficiently transparent so the bin men can check! There are specific days of the week and month for collection of each type of rubbish, and you're in trouble if you get it wrong! If you leave a bag of plastic waste outside when it's actually the day for collection of cardboard and paper, you can sometimes get a nice reminder note in your letterbox, written by the caretaker of the building. It hasn't happened to us yet, but it did indeed happen to our friends just opposite our apartment, who don't have their degree in Waste Management yet either!
