Curiosites japonaises - Japanese curiosities

Voila un post que j'ai commence il y a des mois, attendant d'avoir une liste, sinon complete au moins etoffee, de curiosites japonaises que nous avons rencontre lors de notre vie quotidienne la-bas.

This is a post I started months ago. I was waiting to get enough evidence of all the strange things we discovered in Japan, which are part of the daily life there.

Depuis la fenetre derriere moi au bureau, j'ai souvent vu (et entendu) des "bateaux dragons" qui s'entrainent pour des courses qu'on peut voir un peu partout, riviere ou mer, par ici. C'est a l'origine un sport chinois.

From the window behind my desk, I have often seen (and heard) the dragon boats in training for the competitions which can be seen everywhere here. It is originally a Chinese sport.

Il y a toujours beaucoup de monde qui attend le train dans la plupart des gares de Tokyo/Yokohama mais vous ne verrez jamais de desordre, tout le monde est en ligne derriere les marques au sol qui indiquent ou les portes vont s'ouvrir... c'est impressionant les premieres fois et puis vous faites pareil naturellement... comme des moutons!

There is almost always lots of people waiting for the train in the Tokyo/Yokohama stations, but here everybody is queeing in lines, using the marks on the floor to be exactly where the doors will open... it is impressive the first times and then you are just starting to do the same... like sheep! 

La mode des femmes japonaises est aussi tres surprenante: elles montrent leurs jambes sans etat d'ame mais pas question de porter un decollete, toute Japonaise se doit de posseder un jour un sac a main Vuitton, beaucoup de metiers se font en uniformes (hotesse d'accueil, etc.), les chaussettes ont des doigts pour les orteils, les Japonaises portent des mi-bas avec une jupe courte... et beaucoup aiment a se deguiser en poupee ou autre! Je vous passe bien d'autres curiosites vestimentaires dont nous avons ete temoins!

The way Japanese women dress can be also surprising: they wear very short skirts but never a plunging neckline, every Japanese woman has to have a Vuitton handbag, lots of jobs are done with uniforms, socks have fingers for the toes, Japanese women wear knee socks with a short skirt... and lots of people love to dress themselves like a doll or something else! I cannot list here all the strange things clothing-wise we have seen over the last months!

Autre chose de surprenant: dans les villes, les trottoirs sont envahis par les fleurs et autres arbustes que les gens qui habitent la plantent! Ca cree des massifs ecclectiques et surprenants qui apportent un peu de couleur... la premiere photo ci-dessous a ete prise juste devant mon immeuble de bureau en plein coeur de Tokyo!

Another surprising thing: in the city centers, there are flowers and plants on the pavements which are planted by the people who live there! It looks a bit messy and surprising but bring a bit of a green touch... the first picture below was taken in front of my office building in the heart of Tokyo!

Derniere chose incontournable au Japon, les distributeurs de boisson! Il y en a partout (1 machine pour 23 habitants!!!), meme en pleine campagne, ils vendent pour moins d'1 euro toute sorte de boisson, surtout de l'eau, du the vert ou des cannettes de cafe froid (autre chose typique ici).

Last thing completely typical of Japan: the vending machines! They are everywhere (1 machine for 23 inhabitants!!!), even in the middle of the countryside. You can find drinks for much less than 1 pound, mainly water, green tea and cans of cold coffee (another typical thing here).

Au revoir le Japon! - Bye bye Japan!

Comme je vous l'ai deja annonce, nous avons quitte le Japon a la mi-juillet. Alors il y a bien sur eu l' inevitable demenagement...

As I already mentioned, we left Japan mid-July. There was the unavoidable phase of moving out...

Et puis au revoir le parc Yamashita, avec son beau paquebot, et son coucher de soleil a 19h en plein ete!
And lastly, bye bye the Yamashita Park, with its big boat and its nice sunset a 7pm in the middle of summer!

 

Kidzania Tokyo

Nous avons profite de nos derniers jours a Tokyo pour aller a Kidzania. C'est une sorte de parc d'attraction a l'interieur ou les enfants peuvent essayer toute sorte de metiers, dans des conditions tres proches de la realite. Chaque metier est sponsorise par une marque (deja du bourrage de crane!!!) et tout est bien sur tres bien organise! On a ete content que tous les accompagnateurs parlent anglais car les parents s'assoient et regardent leurs enfants faire leur activite derriere une vitre! Oscar a essaye 5 metiers: cuisiner (pour une chaine japonaise de hamburgers), pilote d'avion, ambulancier, ouvrier de chantier et artiste peintre. Il etait ravi mais ko apres cette journee de dur labeur!

We took the opportunity of being still in Tokyo for a few days to go to Kidzania. It is a kind of indoor amusement park where kids can try out all kinds of jobs, in close to real environment. Each job is sponsored by a brand (to start to influence them already!!!), everything is very well organized! We were happy to see that each guide could speak a bit English, as the parents can only sit and watch their kids from outside! Oscar tried out 5 jobs: cook (in an hamburger shop), pilot, ambulance technician, worker on a bridge contruction site and painter. He was thrilled with this experience but completely exhausted after all this work!

Je ne sais pas si Oscar se rappelera longtemps de cette experience mais moi, oui, c'est sur! Un parfait exemple de l'organisation a la Japonaise et du statut d'enfant-roi des enfants dans cette societe!

I don't know if Oscar will remember that day but I will certainly do! This was a perfect example of the Japanese-style organization but also of the very special place children have in this society!

Nous revoila! - We are back!

Avec 3 mois de retard, je reprend enfin le recit de notre vie quelque peu mouvementee!
Je vais vous montrer tout ce qui s'est passe depuis fin Juin, mais je peux juste deja vous dire que nous habitons maintenant en Angleterre (comme beaucoup d'entre vous le savent)!
After 3 months of absence, I am going to update you on our, well, exciting life!
I will show you what happened since end of June, but I can already tell you that we are now living in England (as many of you know)!
