This past week in Japan is called Golden Week, with several public holidays one after each other. Most of Japan is therefore on holiday for the whole of the week. We thought that "Golden Week" probably had some significance from ancient Japanese traditions many centuries ago, but in fact it's apparently just something to do with a comment from the Managing Director of a Japanese film company called Daiei Films in 1951, when he realized that all the public holidays in this particular week had led to a bumper ticket sales week! Dimanche nous avons decide d'aller au Nogeyama Zoo, a Yokohama. Ce n'est pas trop loin de chez nous, alors nous y sommes alles en velo. Oscar etait devenu trop grand pour son ancien siege pour velo, qui etait monte a l'avant. Daddy a donc installe son nouveau siege que nous avons achete avant de quitter la Hollande, qui se monte a l'arriere du velo. Oscar ressemblait a un vrai coureur du Tour de France, avec son casque et ses lunettes de soleil. Mais les lunettes de soleil ne sont pas restees a leur place tres longtemps!
On Sunday we decided to go to the Nogeyama Zoo in Yokohama. It's not far away, so we decided to go by bike. Oscar had out-grown his old bike seat on the front of the bike, so he had his first go on the new bike seat which we bought before we left Holland, which goes on the back of the bike. He looked all ready and prepared for the Tour de France, with his helmet and sunglasses, but the sunglasses didn't stay on for long !
Nous avons vu beaucoup d'animaux au zoo, comme ce Panda Rouge, apparemment tres rare...
We saw lots of animals at the zoo, including a Red Panda...

Mais Oscar a aussi adore parler au telephone! Nous n'etions pas exactement sur a quoi servaient ces especes de talkie-walkie, peut-etre pour parler aux girafes?! En tout cas, c'est ce que pensait Oscar !
Oscar loves talking on the telephone. We weren't really sure exacly what these kind of walkie-talkies were for, maybe for talking to the giraffes. That's what Oscar thought, anyway !

Then we went to see the black panthers
Nous n'avions pas eu a faire la queue de toute la journee. Quand nous avons vu cette longue file d'attente, nous avons pense que ce devait etre pour voir un animal vraiment spectaculaire. Mais en fin de compte, tous ces gens faisaient la queue pour utiliser le tampon officiel, pour garder en souvenir ou prouver qu'ils sont bien venus au zoo! Les Japonais sont particulierement attaches aux tampons. Nous avons du faire faire un tampon special, portant notre nom en japonais, afin d'ouvrir un compte bancaire. Aussi incroyable que cela puisse paraitre, si vous voulez retirer de l'argent au guichet d'une banque, ou bien si vous voulez remplir une demande de carte de credit etc., vous ne signez rien, vous appliquez votre tampon officiel, qui s'appelle en japonais un "hanko". Lorsque Maman est allee pour la premiere fois au magasin specialise des "hanko's", elle a eu beaucoup de difficultes a comprendre de quoi parlait la femme (qui ne parlait pas anglais) dans le magasin. Apparemment, il y a differents types de "hanko's", selon des utilisations bien specifiques. Nous avons fait faire un hanko avec notre nom de famille uniquement, epele en caracteres japonais, car il n'y avait pas assez de place pour le prenom de Maman! Daddy a encore un autre hanko pour le travail. Si vous achetez quelque chose dans un magasin, ou bien si vous achetez un billet de train, la personne qui vous donnera le recu le tamponnera souvent avec son "hanko" personnel. Daddy dit que le temps passe par les Japonais a vouloir tout tamponner lui parait parfois un peu (beaucoup) exagere!
We hadn't had to queue for anything all day. So when we saw this long queue of people, we thought it must be a queue for a really spectacular animal. But it turned out that all these people were queuing just to use the official stamp, to prove that they had been there. People here in Japan are REALLY keen on getting things stamped! Mummy and Daddy had to have a special stamp made so that they could open a bank account. Unbelievable as it may sound, if you want to withdraw money at the bank, or apply for a credit card etc., then you don't actually sign the form, you stamp it with your official stamp, which is called a "hanko"! When Mummy first went to the Hanko shop, she had lots of problems trying to understand what the lady in the shop was talking about. Apparently, there are different types of hanko's, depending on what it will be used for. We had one made with our name spelled out in Japanese characters, but there wasn't enough room for Mummy's whole name! Daddy then has a separate hanko for work. If you buy something in a shop or a train ticket, then the cashier will often stamp the receipt with their personal hanko stamp. Daddy told me that a lot of this rubber stamping seems to be a bit over the top!
Cet oiseau etait vraiment gigantesque! Apparemment c'etait un condor. Il etait assis par terre, avec ses ailes grandes ouvertes, completement immobile. Peut-etre qu'il essayait tout simplement d'assurer un bon bronzage bien homogene, car il faisait un temps magnifique !
This was a really HUGE bird called a condor. It was just sitting there with its wings open, completely motionless. Maybe he was just trying to get a good, even suntan, as the weather was absolutely gorgeous !
Nous sommes alles voir ensuite les pinguins, qui avaient l'air bien a l'aise dans l'eau bien fraiche de leur bassin, alors que tout le monde etait en train de fondre au soleil !
Then a quick visit to the penguins, who were certainly very happy to be in the nice, cool water while everybody else was melting in the baking sunshine !
Ensuite, juste avant de partir, nous avons decouvert ceci, qui etait assez insolite pour des Europeens comme nous. On n'a jamais rien vu de pareil ! Il y avait un grand espace ouvert, avec beaucoup de souris, de cochons d'Inde, et de poussins, que les enfants pouvaient decouvrir, toucher, prendre dans leurs bras, peigner, etc. !
Then, just as we were about to leave, we came across this, which was really unusual for a zoo. We'd never seen anything like this in Europe before! There was a big open space with lots of mice, guinea pigs and chicks, for children to touch and play with !
La photo suivante est (notamment) dediee a Tata Odile et Grandma, qui n'aiment pas trop les souris! On ne comprendrai pas pourquoi ici, car ces souris sont tres mignonnes !
This next photo is especially for Tata Odile and Grandma, who apparently aren't too fond of mice. I can't understand why, as these mice seemed very friendly to me !
Oscar a pu tenir un des poussins, mais pas pour trop longtemps, car il etait sur le point de l'ecraser dans son poing !
Oscar got chance to hold one of the chicks. But not for long, as he looked like he was about to crush it in his rather strong hand grip!

Il y avait meme des brosses, pour que les enfants puissent peigner les cochons d'Inde !
There were even brushes available, so that people could brush the guinea pigs' fur !
Les derniers animaux que nous avons vus, mais qu'on n'avait pas le droit de toucher, c'etait des animaux qu'Oscar a deja vus dans un de ses films preferes : "Ratatouille" !
Last but not least, some animals which nobody was supposed to touch, which Oscar knew very well from one of his favourite films, "Ratatouille"!
